The "bomb cyclone" barreled through some of the busiest air travel corridors in the nation, The New York Times reported, with as many as 4,000 flights canceled across the country, and another 2,000 delayed by Thursday night.

At least 900 other flights that were scheduled for Friday have also been canceled.

Different airlines drew praise and criticism for their handling of the cancellations, with some offering refunds and notifying travelers hours in advance of cancellations.

Many other travelers found themselves stranded in airports far from home, however, and were offered only limited rebooking options.
