4. Conflicting reports about Cole’s motives, political beliefs 

While law enforcement officials have declined to comment on Cole’s motive, media outlets have reported conflicting information about Cole’s political beliefs.

The New York Post reported Thursday that sources had informed the publication that investigators were examining his connection with “anarchist” writings or leanings. And CNN reported Friday that Cole told investigators he believed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

Outrage over the results of the 2020 presidential election loomed large on Jan. 6, 2021. On the same day that the pipes outside the DNC and RNC were discovered, a group of supporters of President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol to protest the 2020 presidential election results showing that former President Joe Biden was the winner.
