Churches Offer Help as Haiti Recovers
The World Council of Churches will support Haiti as it transitions to democracy in coming months, the Rev. Dr Samuel Kobia, General Secretary of the WCC told Haiti’s interim president this week.
During an ecumenical service at the Methodist Church of Port-au-Prince on Sunday, Kobia said everyone – including christians – is “called to transform Haiti…from a violent to a peaceful state.”
The ecumenical service followed a meeting with Haiti interim president Boniface Alexadre at the presidential palace two days earlier. At that time, Kobia promised that Haiti’s “serious problems” would be on the agenda of the Council’s forthcoming assembly in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in February 2006.
"We are aware of your efforts and ready to offer our assistance," Kobia said.
General elections for a permanent government in Haiti are slated for October. The government will replace the interim government that was put in place after an armed rebellion ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
