Entertaining Angels without Knowing It

Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:2)

Developing countries can sometimes be dangerous places, and Nigeria is no exception. Once, while traveling through Lagos, Nigeria's largest city, the taxi that I was riding in with several fellow missionary teachers broke down. Some men along the side of the road offered to fix our car but threatened us with physical harm when we could not afford the extortionist amount they demanded we pay. Our taxi driver, a native of Lagos, insisted we were in danger, and we offered up many frightened and helpless prayers to God. Suddenly, another group of men pulled up beside us and told us to pay the con artists who fixed our car a reasonable fee for their services and then saw to it that they accepted it.

As we hurried away, our taxi driver said that the second group must have been angels sent to help us. Perhaps they were, and if so, this is probably the closest I have come to "entertaining angels without knowing it." I will never forget how God seemed to intervene so supernaturally that day. Whatever your circumstances, be mindful today of the Lord's providential care.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your providence and also for sending your angels to watch over us.
