'Ghost in the Shell' Movie Release Date: Trailer Reveals Big Bad Kuze and What He Is After

A new trailer for "Ghost in the Shell" has been released, revealing a bit more about the story and the characters that fans will see in the movie adaptation.

For starters, the clip treated viewers with their first look at the big bad, Kuze, who informs Scarlet Johannson's character, Major, of what he claims to be the truth about her past.

As seen in the "Ghost in the Shell" trailer, Kuze appears to have the ability to dissolve into sand, among other things. He also seems to know an awful lot about Major, who admits she only knows "fragments" of her past.

"Everything they told you was a lie," he says to Major, who was told that just when she was dying after the "attack" (bits and pieces of it she remembers), she was given by the people she is now working for a second chance at life as the highly trained cyborg she is today.

"They did not save your life," Kuze counters. "They stole it," he further reveals. It looks like there is some truth in his words as it was later revealed in the "Ghost in the Shell" trailer that she no longer has a "clean brain."

Major appears to have gained new knowledge and information that someone like her should not have access to. "They created me, but they cannot control me," Major declares by the end of the clip.

In the film, Kuze is played by "You Can't Win" and "Criminal Activities" actor Michael Pitt. Other cast members include Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano and Juliette Binoche.

"Ghost in the Shell" is an adaptation of the hit manga series of the same name by Masamune Shirow. The film is being accused of whitewashing the role of Major, but Johansson has addressed the controversy during an interview with Marie Claire.

"I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive," the "Avengers" star said.

"Also, having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity. Certainly, I feel the enormous pressure of that — the weight of such a big property on my shoulders," she added.

"Ghost in the Shell" hits the theaters on March 31.
