Ice Cream Sandwich: LG to Release Android Powered Dual-Screen Doubleplay

T-Mobile will launch a new dual-screen smartphone this holiday season, with the launch of the LG DoublePlay handset, according to a recent announcement made by the company.

The new Android powered device will sport two screens including a 3.5 inch main display, along with a 2-inch sub-display underneath it.

It will launch running Google’s Gingerbread OS and will eventually be able to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich when it is released.

According to eweek, each screen can work together to provide larger screen real estate for users, or separately to allow users to multitask, by checking email on one screen and playing Tetris on the other.

Both of the smartphone’s displays will be touchscreens.

This new DoublePlay device is similar to Sprint's Kyocera Echo, another handset which also runs on Gingerbread.

That smartphone has two 3.5 WVGA capacitive touchscreens which are capable of working together or independently.

The DoublePlay one ups that device by also including a slide-out QWERTY keyboard that couches the 2-inch sub-screen.

It will also have a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and will be compatible with the Swype keyboard application for those users who prefer touch over traditional buttons.

The device comes with a 5-megapixel camera capable of filming in 720p HD.

No information has been released by T-Mobile regarding the smartphone’s price or any additional hardware which may be included on it.

The company did announce that the DoublePlay will be available this holiday season which makes it just in time to compete with Apple’s iPhone 4S smartphone.

Apple’s new handset sold 4 million units in its first weekend, doubling the sales of its predecessor, the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4 was the top selling smartphone in the U.S., since its launch in 2010.
