An Indiana Wesleyan University professor was recognized for his work in leading tours to Israel and opening up the minds and hearts of people to the historical land.
On Sept. 18, the Indianapolis Israel Bonds Organization honored Dr. Wilbur Glenn Williams, an Associate Professor of Biblical Literature and Archaeology at IWU, at the Indiana-Israel Dinner of State, thanking him for his work for Israel.
State Governor Mitch Daniels, who was honorary co-chair of the dinner, also presented Williams a Distinguished Hoosier award.
Over the past 47 years, Williams has logged over 100 trips to Israel. When he was unable to enter the Old City of Jerusalem during his first trip in 1958 due security restrictions, Williams decided to become a Holy Lands tour guide and bring many people to Israel.
They are more than just tours, though, said Williams to the IWU Relations. They are spiritual odysseys to help people get closer to the Lord; an avenue for people to better define their relationship with God.
Today, Williams continues his tours, with five trips scheduled for the coming academic year. In the past, students who joined these spiritual odyssey trips traveled from Mt. Hermon to the Dead Sea over a course of 10 days, learning about the Bible and archaeology and visiting famous sites within the Bible. Williams himself has also traveled to Israel to participate in archaeological digs.
