Instagram Video Now a Possibility? Facebook Announcement June 20th

Facebook is intentionally keeping the details surrounding its June 20 press conference under wraps, but according to one source, the social media giant may have plans to introduce a video option to Instagram.

As social media apps that offer users video share options grow in popularity, it appears that Facebook may be making attempts to keep up with the competition. The company recently extended an invite for a press conference, which will take place on June 20. But details behind what will be discussed at the event have been kept under wraps.

According to one source, the details could involve a video expansion to the Instagram app. Instagram began as a 13-person start-up originally headed by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. Facebook purchased the picture sharing app in April of 2012 for $1 billion.

A source claiming to have inside information about the conference reported the details about a possible Instagram video extension to TechCrunch on Monday. But rumors about Instagram expanding its offerings have been surfacing for months as other social media video apps have gained popularity. Vine, in particular, which is operated by Twitter and allows users to share 5-10 second videos, has seen a large spark in popularity since its January debut. At its peak, the app acquired nearly 3 million user links, which was more than Instagram in June.

While multiple sites attempt to further investigate possible discussion points for the press conference, Facebook's invite has remained obscure. The invite simply reads: "A small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product."

The invitation was sent out last week and was followed by rumors that the company was planning a news reading app. Those rumors have since faded away. Internet users showed support for the idea of adding video to Instagram.

"Wouldn't mind this one bit," one user wrote on Tech Crunch. "Instagram has a larger user-base whereas I have to hunt down and find everyone I follow on Instagram on Vine."
