Janitors Bound and Gagged Students Inside School Bathroom
Two janitors at an elementary school have been removed after it was reported that they bound and gagged at least four 10-year-old boys in the school.
According to authorities, the two maintenance men were suspended after binding the boys with "caution" tape. Sources told NBC New York that employees thought they were "horsing around" with the boys.
After the incident, the boys reported the maintenance men to their principal, who has launched an investigation into the occurrence.
"Regardless of their intent," said Long Branch Superintendent Michael Salvatore, "it was a stupid decision they made." Salvatore then reported the incident to police. "After the reports and the review of our security cameras revealed the possibility that the incident took place, parents were notified as well as the proper authorities."
No charges had been filed as of press time, and the janitors have not been allowed back on school property.
"The mission of the West Orange Public Schools is to engage in an energetic partnership with all components of this culturally-diverse community … and to instill in all students the knowledge and decision-making skills essential to make appropriate choices," reads the school's website.
Gregory Elementary School is located in New Jersey and operates with the motto: "Behavior that's admired is the path to power among people everywhere!"
In light of this recent behavior, it seems some didn't get that message.
"It has been expressed to use this was in jest without malice, and I hope that's accurate but in the end, unfortunately, the misconduct leads up to provide some consequences for the employees," Salvatore told CBS.
There has been strong reaction against the janitors' actions.
Twitter user Mr. Ref asked, "What is going on with people nowadays?"
Others have said that while the actions may have been "in jest," they were certainly not funny. Kurt Siegelin noted that the "superintendent [is] downplaying 'bound and gagged' kids at Gregory Elem."
None of the parents of children involved have spoken out yet about the situation, which may be because of the ongoing investigation. It remains to be seen whether the janitors will retain their positions or be charged with criminal mischief.
