Madonna Album Sales Drop Breaks Records
After topping charts last week, Madonna's new album "MDNA" has seen the biggest sales drop in week two in U.S. chart history.
"MDNA" debuted at the top of Billboard charts, selling 359,000 copies in its first week. The veteran singer's success came as no surprise, but week two sales have fallen a whopping 88 percent.
The album's drastic sales decline marks the biggest second-week drop in history, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
This week, "MDNA" has sold a mere 46,000 according to Forbes magazine, although official figures have yet to be announced.
Reports also indicate that Madonna's initial sales success was "artificially inflated" due to the singer offering albums packaged with concert tickets.
Also releasing a new album last week, Lionel Richie was relegated to the no. 2 position in album sales last week as a result of Madonna's giveaway offering.
"I do think that all the people involved in the Madonna ticket-CD deal should apologize to Richie for denying him his rightful place at No. 1," wrote Roger Friedman on the Forbes website.
A majority of Madonna's concert tickets have already been bought, and as a result, the stream of bundled albums sales has slowed.
"MDNA" sales in the second week are weaker in the U.S. than they are in the U.K., where the album recently descended from No. 1 to No. 7.
Aside from offering the concert tickets, Madonna also traditionally promoted the album with appearances on Jimmy Fallon's talk show and participating in a question and answer session on Twitter last week.
"People are really digging it," said Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, while speaking to THR. "We feel good about the album. I'm proud of the work she's done, and [the music industry] is giving the lock back."
Despite Oseary's comments, "MDNA" has seen mixed reviews.
