'New Girl' Moves to Netflix: Episodes on Hulu Removed

Starting Monday, "New Girl" girl episodes will exclusively be aired on Netflix. While details of the arrangement were not disclosed, Hulu subscribers may need to be wary.

Beginning Monday the first full season of "New Girl" will be made available on Netflix through an exclusive agreement with 20th Century Fox. The show marks one of the earliest arrivals of a television series on the popular streaming company.

"We are thrilled to be able offer it so quickly to our U.S. subscribers," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. "We know our members love comedies and that they'll enjoy watching all the current and future episodes of New Girl whenever and wherever they want."

"New Girl" is Fox's most popular series on Tuesday nights, successfully marketing to often hard to reach demographics, including young women. The show is also a popular streaming offer on Netflix competitor Hulu. Episodes of "New Girl" appear on Hulu for paid subscribers the day after the episode has aired on television. For non-paying subscribers, a handful of episodes is available a week after the original air-date.

But a new, exclusive contract with Netflix could potentially interfere with Hulu offerings. Sources confirmed that the full current season of New Girl will no longer be available to stream on Hulu, according to Entertainment Weekly. Netflix will continue to add new seasons of the series as current seasons finish.

Hulu is in part owned by Fox's parent company through Rupert Murdoch's New York-based 21st Century Fox. The sale of "New Girl" to a competing company may seem strange at best. In the meantime, Hulu is still up for sale. A soft extension of final bids for the company was announced on Friday. Valued at around $1 billion, its sale could have severe consequences for fans.
