'Sleepy Hollow' Season 2 Plot Spoilers: New Sheriff in Town, Historical Characters to Appear in New Season

Season 1 of "Sleepy Hollow" ended with a lot of cliffhangers that promise a phenomenal second season for the show. FOX's modern-day retelling of the 1820 short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was one of television's most successful shows last year, as it was renewed for a second season after only three episodes of its run. Initially set for 15 episodes, it is reported that the producers are now preparing for 18 episodes which will contain a lot more action and drama.

In the final episode of Season 1, fans watched as Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) and Lt. Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) were separated by the forces of evil. Abbie was stuck in Purgatory as she traded places with Ichabod's wife Katrina (Katia Winter).

Meanwhile, Ichabod was buried alive in a wooden box in the ground by the Horseman of War, otherwise known as his son, Jeremy (John Noble). The other characters didn't fare so well either, as Katrina was taken by the Horseman of Death, Abbie's sister Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood) was seriously injured in a car crash, and Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) was arrested for murder.

At the "Sleepy Hollow" Comic-con panel, the producers revealed that there was going to be a new sheriff in town who will make Ichabod's and Abbie's supernatural treks harder to pull off. Though the show execs did not reveal who will be playing the role, they teased that "she will have history with Abbie's mom."

Fans will also get to see more of Noble's character, as the Horseman of War intends to do more evil deeds in town. It was also confirmed that other historical characters such as Benjamin Franklin and Benedict Arnold will be seen in season 2.

"Sleepy Hollow" returns to FOX for its second season on Sept. 22 at 9 p.m. ET.
