Pope Sisinnius consecrated – Jan. 15, 708

This week marks the anniversary of when Sisinnius was consecrated pope, going on to have one of the shortest papal reigns in the history of the Roman Catholic Church.
A native of Syria who was said to have suffered from severe gout, Sisinnius would only reign as bishop of Rome for 20 days, until his death the following month.
“Although he was so afflicted with gout that he was unable even to feed himself, he is nevertheless said to have been a man of strong character, and to have been able to take thought for the good of the city,” noted the Catholic Encyclopedia.
“He gave orders to prepare lime to repair the walls of Rome, and before he died consecrated a bishop for Corsica.”
He would be succeeded by Pope Constantine, who was also from Syria.
