'Father of the Pentecostal movement' gets married – Dec. 31, 1896

This week marks the anniversary of when Charles Fox Parham, a preacher considered by many to the “Father of the Pentecostal movement,” got married to Sarah Thistlewaite.

The two had previously met during an evangelistic meeting in Kansas where Parham preached, with Parham later proposing to Thistlewaite via postal mail.

“He warned Sarah that his life was totally dedicated to the Lord and that he could not promise a home or worldly comforts, but he would be happy for her to trust God for their future,” explained the website Apostolic Archives International, Inc.

“They were married six months later, on December 31, 1896, in her grandfather’s home and began their ministry together.”
