This week in Christian history: Swiss Guard created, Charles Gore dies, Newsboys co-founder leaves faith
Swiss Guard founded – Jan. 22, 1506

This week marks the anniversary of when the Swiss Guard, the historic military force created to protect the pope, was established by Pope Julius II.
Julius II created the military order after seeing how the king of France used Swiss mercenaries as security. At the time, Switzerland had a reputation for having the best-hired soldiers in Europe.
In the modern day, each Swiss Guard recruit is required to complete military training in Switzerland, then undertake a five-week training course in Rome, and then train in the use of 16th century weapons.
“After this, the guards are sworn in and their families are invited to a private audience with the Pope,” explained Vatican News in a 2021 piece.
“Along with the Pontifical Gendarmerie, the Swiss Guards are responsible for ensuring the safety of the Pope both within and outside the Vatican and for accompanying Pope Francis as he moves around among the people.”
