This week in Christian history: Teen Mania ends, Thomas Tenison dies, missionary Amy Carmichael born
Amy Carmichael is born – Dec. 16, 1867

This week marks the anniversary of when Amy Carmichael, a British missionary known for her efforts to care for exploited children in India, was born in Millisle, Northern Ireland.
Raised by devout Presbyterians, Carmichael did charity work in Belfast before eventually committing herself to overseas mission work, first in Japan and later in India.
While in India, Carmichael became best known for her work rescuing children from Hindu temple prostitution. She founded the Dohnavur Fellowship, which was named after the village where it was located, to advance these efforts.
“Amy’s deep compassion for these young girls led her to dedicate her entire life to their cause. She understood the darkness and despair they faced and was determined to shine the light of God’s love into their lives,” explained the Christian ministry group Missions 1.
“She rescued countless girls from the clutches of the temple system, giving them a chance to experience a life free from exploitation and abuse.”
