4. A respectful response to my friend John Piper about voting for Trump

In this op-ed, Wayne Grudem, who teaches at Phoenix Seminary, offered a counterargument to influential theologian John Piper, who warned that President Donald Trump’s “deadly behavior” will lead the U.S. to “destruction of more kinds than we can imagine.”

Grudem explained why he chose to vote for Trump in 2020, arguing that while Trump has character flaws — “egotistical, bombastic, and brash,” and having been unfaithful in his marriages — they are not disqualifying flaws in the election.

A presidential candidate’s character and policies are both important to consider before voting, he acknowledged, but most of the time the two opposing candidates are “rather ordinary human beings” who both have flaws. “In that case, an evaluation of their policies becomes decisive,” he contended.

Also, unlike with laws that compel obedience, people can choose not to imitate Trump’s character flaws, Grudem noted.
