'Drill, baby, drill!': Energy policy

Trump, who has asserted the need for American energy independence, declared a "national energy emergency" in an attempt to get around environmental policies that he believes hamper such a goal.

The executive order "Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential" reversed a Biden-era restriction on drilling in large swaths of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"The State of Alaska holds an abundant and largely untapped supply of natural resources including, among others, energy, mineral, timber, and seafood," the order says. "Unlocking this bounty of natural wealth will raise the prosperity of our citizens while helping to enhance our Nation’s economic and national security for generations to come."

In his inaugural address, Trump reasserted his support for the U.S. using its own resources, at one point yelling, "Drill, baby, drill!" to applause.
