Top 6 issues Trump addressed in sweeping executive orders
Border security and illegal immigration
One of Trump's most high-profile orders involves illegal immigration and policies regarding the U.S.-Mexico border, an issue that was at the forefront of both of his campaigns.
In an order titled "Securing Our Borders," Trump claimed "the United States has endured a large-scale invasion at an unprecedented level" during the Biden administration, and signaled his intent to boost border security by resuming construction of the border wall, ending "catch-and-release" policies and reinstating the "Remain in Mexico" policy in place during his first administration.
The order also suspended use of the "CBP One" app that eased the entry of illegal immigrants during the Biden administration, and ended humanitarian parole permitting immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to enter the U.S. for two years with a sponsor.
A proclamation titled "Declaring A National Emergency At The Southern Border Of The United States" declared a "national emergency" at the border, and an order titled "Clarifying The Military’s Role In Protecting The Territorial Integrity Of The United States," urges the U.S. military to devise a strategy that would place U.S. troops there.
An executive order titled "Guaranteeing The States Protection Against Invasion" also designated the flood of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border as an invasion, and directed authorities to "take all appropriate action to repel, repatriate, or remove any alien engaged in the invasion across the southern border of the United States."
Another executive order ended birthright citizenship for children born to parents who are in the U.S. illegally, which has already drawn lawsuits from progressive groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
