Trump's week in review: E. Jean Carroll investigation; ‘anti-weaponization’ fund blocked; Iran ceasefire
2. Trump close to deal with Iran to expand ceasefire, negotiations
Trump administration and Iran have reached a preliminary agreement to extend a ceasefire for 60 days and begin a new round of negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program, The Associated Press reported Friday.
The decision was still up to Trump, according to Vice President JD Vance, who told reporters that it was “hard to say exactly when or if the president's going to sign.”
The war began in February after the U.S. and Israel conducted a series of strikes on Iran, reportedly hitting several military and government targets in Tehran and elsewhere. The attacks resulted in the death of 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, several high-ranking officials and many civilians.
The Islamic Republic has largely closed off the economically significant Strait of Hormuz to oil tankers, causing a global oil shortage and major increases in gas prices.
