Trump's week in review: From healthcare fraud takedown to the Big Beautiful Bill
4. Trump signs the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law
President Donald Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which contains many of his signature domestic policy priorities, into law at a White House picnic celebrating Independence Day on Friday. The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate voted 51-50 Tuesday to pass the measure.
The vote in the U.S. Senate fell largely along party lines, with all Democrats opposing the measure and all but three Republicans supporting it. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, Rand Paul, R-Ky., and Thom Tillis, R-N.C., broke from their party and Trump to oppose the legislation.
The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives voted 218-214 Thursday to approve the Senate version of the legislation, with all Democrats opposing it along with Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act contains provisions banning entities that perform abortions from receiving federal funding for one year, expanding the child tax credit to $2,200 and allocating more than $46.5 billion for a border wall and border security along with $5 billion for new Border Patrol facilities and $4.1 billion to hire new border enforcement officials.
The legislation also enables school-aged children who live in households where the income is no more than 300% of the area median gross income to receive scholarships from private organizations to pay for “qualified” educational expenses, including private school tuition as well as books and instructional materials.
