5. HHS report denounces gender transition procedures for minors
In a 400-page report published Thursday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services condemned the provision of puberty-blocking drugs, cross-sex hormones and gender transition surgeries to minors with gender dysphoria as "invasive" and "usually irreversible" interventions that "carry risk of significant harms including infertility/sterility, sexual dysfunction, impaired bone density accrual, adverse cognitive impacts, cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, surgical complications, and regret."
"Meanwhile, systematic reviews of the evidence have revealed deep uncertainty about the purported benefits of these interventions," the report stated. The document stressed that it was "not a clinical practice guideline" and did not amount to a "legislative or policy" recommendation.
Its intended purpose was to serve as an information resource for "policymakers, clinicians, therapists, medical organizations and, importantly, patients and their families."
The report states there is "currently no international consensus about best practices for the care of children and adolescents with gender dysphoria."
HHS expressed concern about the deference to the "'gender-affirming' model of care recommended by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health" in the U.S., citing a "systematic review of international guideline quality" finding that the model encouraging unquestioned embrace of gender transition procedures for trans-identified youth as lacking "developmental rigour and transparency."
