Update: On Oct. 28, Mike Pence announced that he was suspending his presidential campaign. 

Former Vice President Mike Pence formally launched his long-expected bid for the Republican presidential nomination in a Twitter video on June 7, his 64th birthday, declaring that “God is not done with America yet.”

The former Indiana governor and congressman, who served as vice president to former President Trump for four years, saw his relationship with the man he served under sour following the January 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, where Trump supporters sought to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. While Pence did not mention Trump by name in his initial launch video, his campaign directly addressed his former boss and the Jan. 6 incident in a subsequent video. 

The second ad, released by a pro-Pence Committed to America PAC, featured the narrator summarizing the events of Jan. 6 from Pence’s point of view as “a president begging him to ignore the Constitution, a mob shouting for him to die and an anxious nation watching for one man to do what’s right.” While images of Trump appeared on screen, the narrator declared “a weak man appeases a mob” as the video attempted to contrast Trump with Pence, whom he referred to as a “man of courage and character” that “stands up to them.”

“That day, one man failed the test of leadership while another stood tall,” the ad insisted. The video transitioned from attacking Trump over Jan. 6 to criticizing his actions since leaving office. As pictures of news articles headlined “Trump turns on his own supporters over abortion” and “Trump calls Putin ‘genius’ and ‘savvy’ for Ukraine invasion” appeared on screen, the narrator remarked “Since then, this so-called leader has continued to abandon our conservative principles.”

With video footage and pictures of trans-identified influencer Dylan Mulvaney on a Bud Light can as well as calls to defund the police and crime sprees appearing in the background, the narrator maintained that “with a woke mob trying to take away our freedom, we need a president who won’t flinch, who won’t try to cut deals with our values, a president with courage and the faith to lead us through turbulent times and keep America the beacon of freedom for all mankind.”
