'Independence Day 2: Resurgence' News: A Different Kind of Politics

The cast of the highly anticipated "Independence Day 2: Resurgence" were able to share some details about their characters.

A recently released trailer for the upcoming film showed the return of Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman, who were original cast members of the first installment. Goldblum is expected to take on the role of David Levinson, while Pullman plays former President Thomas J. Whitmore. The two stars were able to talk to Slash Film about what to expect from their two characters, as well as the movie.

According to Pullman, his character will have a peaceful life, secluding himself from the politics of his country. He explained that he will reside in the suburbs of Virginia, away from Washington DC. However, a part of his life will still be involved in politics. He stated, "My daughter [Maika Monroe] has the exciting things going on now. She used to live in the White House to me, but she is now working for... the big woman."

Pullman revealed that the country will be under a female president, will be portrayed by Sela Ward. In comparison to how Pullman's character had fought against the aliens, it was stated that Ward's President Lanford will focus on the Earth Space Defense program. He hinted that her approach will set a different environment for politics.

He said, "It's a very different climate presidentially. It's all about defense and building up and the neglect of money towards other things in the country. People are weary, people have been living in fear for a very long time, not unlike today, having our own violent, traumatic event with 9/11 and everything going on in the world. So you have the same kind of climate, and in terms of her storyline, it's totally different, because the circumstances are different. We're prepared. We think we are. We hope we are. We're not caught by surprise in that respect. A different time."

"Independence Day: Resurgence" will hit theaters this June 24, 2016.
