Prince Harrry News: Royal Family Member Stresses Importance of Education on Women's Empowerment

Prince Harry has further endeared himself to the women not only because of his looks but as well as the causes he champions. In a recent speech that he delivered at the Girl Summit in Kathmandu, Nepal earlier last week, the 31-year old prince tackled the issues that haunt the women of today and stressed the importance of education in empowering them.

Harry admitted that, although he had spoken of the unique challenges that women encounter in the past, he has never acknowledged the obvious reality of the problems that beset women and the lack of opportunities that can empower them.

"Whether it's a girl in Lesotho living with HIV; or the talented young woman in Britain who doesn't get taken seriously because of where she grew up; or the 14-year-old girl forced out of school so she can get married here in Nepal, we need to acknowledge that so many countries and cultures are failing to protect the opportunities of young women and girls in the way they do for boys," he said.

The Prince opined that it is important for men like him to recognize these problems in the same light as Nepal's first-ever female president, President Bhandari, and activist Malala Yousafzai do. Apart from also mentioning U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama as someone worth emulating in terms of women empowerment, Harry also cited her words saying that "change needs to come from the bottom up."

"… We won't unlock these opportunities for young women and girls unless we can change the mindset of every family and community. To achieve this, it cannot just be women who speak up for girls," he stressed.

The Prince went on discussing the plight of women from around the world by citing statistics that he has knowledge of. He said that 62 million girls don't get the education that should be rightfully given to them. In effect, he said, they end up marrying at an early age and eventually stay at home without the opportunity to better many aspects of their lives.

"How can this cycle be broken? We all know what the answer is - education," he ended his speech.

Prince Harry has been touring Nepal in line with his duties as a royalty. Apart from attending the Girl Summit, he also spent time with the Gurkhas, which is a military brigade that, at one point, had members who sacrificed their lives defending the British.
