Trump's week in review: ‘De-banking' banned; new census ordered; peace deal signed

3. Trump orders a new census excluding illegal aliens
In a statement Thursday, Trump announced that he had "instructed our Department of Commerce to begin work on a new and highly accurate CENSUS based on modern day facts and figures and, importantly, using the results and information gained from the Presidential Election of 2024."
"People who are in our Country illegally will not be counted in the census," he vowed.
Trump's call for a new census comes five years after the 2020 U.S. census and five years before the 2030 census is scheduled to take place. The U.S. Constitution mandates a census every 10 years for the purpose of apportioning the seats in the U.S. House of Representatives based on population and determining the makeup of the Electoral College that determines who wins the presidential election.
The president did not specify when the new census would be completed, leaving the possibility that new population figures could have an impact on the 2026 midterm elections. While the Constitution does not explicitly forbid mid-decade redistricting, critics see the call for a new census as an attempt to gain an advantage for Republicans in the midterm elections.
The push for a new census follows an effort by the White House to get several Republican-controlled states to redraw their congressional maps to make the districts more favorable to Republicans.
