$120 Egg Sandwich to Be Featured During Bacon Week in Australia

An upscale restaurant in Australia is giving a new meaning to the traditional bacon-n-egg sandwich as the country celebrates Bacon Week.

The restaurant, 4Fourteen is making ready a $120 egg-and-bacon roll to coincide with Bacon Week, officials said. The restaurant is in Surry Hills and the high-dollar grub will only be on the menu for the duration of Bacon Week, The Sunday Telegraph reported.

The sandwich features award-winning bacon from Slade Point Meat Specialists in Mackay, Queensland, a pan-fried duck egg, semi-dried and smoked gourmet truss tomatoes, duck foie gras, caviar, creme fraiche, shaved truffles and English cheddar, squeezed between a handmade brioche bun.

It will be served with a side of chips and shaved truffle aioli. And as the sandwich has caught the attention of foodies around the globe, the top chef at 4Fourteen does not expect that orders for her new egg sandwich will be flying out the window.

4Fourteen head chef Carla Jones said she wanted to do something that highlights the quality pork raised in Australia. It is more of a statement with this dish rather than a serious attempt to add a new item to the menu.

"It's not something I ever thought I'd be doing but it will be interesting to see how many we'll sell," she told The Sunday Telegraph. "I reckon some people will buy it just to see what it's like. I'm not sure I'd eat it -- I'm not that into truffles and stuff like that."

Bacon Week was created to promote quality Australian pork and chefs in Sydney are featuring items on their menu that use bacon.

"About two-thirds of bacon sales made in Australia are from pork that's imported and the average consumer doesn't know that's going on," Australian Pork Chief Executive Officer Andrew Spencer told the Telegraph.

Bacon week is scheduled to run May 12 until May 19.
