The Boy Scouts of America announced that it will allow girls to join the organization, and starting in 2019 girls will be able to earn the rank of Eagle Scout.

Local scouting organizations can still opt to have separate cub scout dens for boys and girls. The BSA said it made the decision based on two nationwide surveys it commissioned which revealed interest in expanding the group to entire families, according to NBC Wednesday. The BSA board voted to support this unanimously.
