Mamdani has condemned Adams for cooperating with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts by allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement to enter Rikers Island, a notorious prison located in the city.

As part of his vision for “Trump-proofing NYC,” Mamdani promised that, if elected, he would “ensure all city-owned or city-leased facilities remain protected from Trump’s deportation efforts” and work to ensure that no city resources are used for immigration enforcement.”

An additional aspect of Mamdani’s platform involves spending $165 million on legal services for illegal immigrants.

Mamdani has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. In March, Mamdani angrily confronted border czar Tom Homan at the New York state Capitol in Albany as law enforcement officials worked to push him back.

“How many New Yorkers will you detain? How many more New Yorkers without charge?” he asked.

At a press conference after the confrontation, Mamdani indicated that the source of his outrage at the Trump administration was the federal government’s efforts to deport Mahmoud Khalil, whom the mayoral candidate described as “a legal permanent resident and father-to-be.”

The Trump administration worked to deport Khalil, a recent graduate of Columbia University, as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to enforce “President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism.” The federal government alleged that “Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,” by spearheading protests against the Israeli government on the Columbia University campus.
