6 times Democrats were killed, beaten or threatened in targeted attacks
1. Pipe bombs targeting 13 prominent Democrats, famous liberals
In October 2018, several prominent Democrats and liberals had pipe bombs mailed to them. The explosives were either received by the intended recipients or intercepted by authorities. None of the targets were harmed.
Public figures targeted with pipe bombs included former Secretary of State and 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, former President Bill Clinton, billionaire Democratic megadonor George Soros, former President Barack Obama, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., former CIA Director John Brennan and actor Robert De Niro.
Additional targets, as identified in a criminal complaint against perpetrator Cesar Sayoc, included then-former Vice President Joe Biden, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., then-Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, D-Fla.
As explained in the complaint detailing the allegations against Sayoc, the perpetrator had strong political views demonstrated in part by stickers on his van criticizing the cable news outlet CNN. CNN, which employed Brennan at the time, was known for airing programming and employing on-air personalities critical of President Donald Trump.
