2. Esther Salas
On July 19, 2020, federal judge Esther Salas was targeted in an attack at her home where her son was shot and killed while her husband was wounded. Salas, who was appointed to the bench by President Barack Obama in 2011, served as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. She was not injured in the attack.
In a statement published on July 20, 2020, the FBI identified Roy Den Hollander as the suspect in the attack. Hollander elaborated on his animus toward Salas in a book he wrote, titled Born Under a Bad Sign: Stupid Frigging Fool. Hollander described Salas as “a lazy and incompetent Latina judge appointed by Obama.”
Hollander, a lawyer, had argued a case before Salas based on whether women should be required to register for the draft. He derided Salas, and Latina judges in general, as “driven by an inferiority complex” and attributed her entire career to “affirmative action.”
His criticism of Salas constitutes a tiny fraction of his book, which documents staunch anti-feminist views stemming from hatred toward his mother.
