Manipulated by predators, sold for sex: 12 survivors of online sexual exploitation denied justice

7. Doe No. 1 v. Backpage.com (1st Cir. 2016)

Another Jane Doe featured in the latest "Dirty Dozen List" said that she was sex trafficked as a minor on Backpage. The site was similar to Craigslist in that users could post classified advertisements for jobs, rentals and adult services. Backpage closed its adult section in 2017 following reports of the site facilitating trafficking and prostitution. 

According to Jane Doe, she was raped over 1,000 times due to advertisements of the underage girl posted on Backpage's "Escorts" section. She sued Backpage, accusing the site of profiting from illegal behavior and making it easy for users to sell people online. 

"But courts dismissed her case under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act," NCOSE wrote.
