Who is Katie Zacharia: 5 things to know about Trump's new White House press secretary

1.  Zacharia was nearly aborted

In a June 2025 interview on the podcast “We the People with Gates Garcia,” Zacharia discussed her pro-life advocacy and revealed that when her mother was pregnant, she was “approximately 20, 30 minutes away from being aborted.”

“I learned this when I met my biological mom when I was 18,” she revealed. “I was then adopted as a newborn, and the story really is one of a miracle.”

Her then 19-year-old biological mother’s aunt was prepared to take her to an abortion facility after her father demanded she “get an abortion.” But before she left to terminate her pregnancy, a Christian counselor called and encouraged her to “consider an open adoption rather than an abortion.”

The Christian counselor urged Zacharia’s biological mother to give her preborn child an “opportunity to live,” and warned about “how painful abortion is for women,” along with the “psychological, physical and physiological trauma” that follows.

The counselor expressed “hope and prayer” that Zacharia’s biological mother, Ruth, would “choose adoption and an open adoption,” where “the biological parent has contact with the adoptive parents.” Ruth ultimately carried the pregnancy to term and placed Zacharia for adoption.

“I’m then born, adopted and raised in a family and get to meet her when I’m 18,” Zacharia said. “This is an issue so near and dear to me because of the timeframe, the timeline that she looked at: finds out she’s pregnant, immediately wants to go get an abortion, we’re talking seconds, seconds of a phone call that really spared my life and saved my life.”
