Memorial Day Observances
On Saturday, May 29, as a new memorial was dedicated in Washington D.C. to those who served the nation during World War II, millions of Christians offered silent prayers and services to protect those currently serving in Iraq.
"I was finally able to cry,” said a young woman attending an interfaith memorial service at Washington on May 27.
The service, sponsored by the National Council of Churches USA, gathered people from various faiths to grieve the dead and receive comfort in becoming the “agents of peace.”
As part of the observance, the participants left a memorial of flowers in the traffic roundabout at Thomas Circle.
According to the NCC, eighteen similar services were known to be held in cities across the country on May 27 with an additional four services scheduled for May 30-31.
