Mother Mary

Vanessa Benavente, who portrays Mary, shared her experience of conveying the gravity and sadness that her character feels as Jesus nears His crucifixion.

“Towards the end, I feel like I'm going to be grieving as much as Mary as Vanessa, from just the circumstances of it all,” she reflected. “But it's true that now, I sometimes just have to look at Jonathan and see him imagining all these things and struggling, and it hits me as if I were really his mom because I have such a connection with him built through years of acting together. I love how I can … tie my experiences into what's really happening on set that day.

“I think the stories are universal, from Mary Magdalene struggling with addiction to Matthew struggling with mental illness, from a mother worrying about her son and really grieving him even before he's gone,” she added. “I think there's really truly something for everyone, and everyone on this earth is struggling with something, so I feel like we really speak to everyone.”
