This week marks the anniversary of when Juan de Valdes, a Spanish intellectual and member of the Protestant Reformation, had his Dialogue on Christian Doctrine published.

While the work was initially supported by prominent Catholic figures in Spain, eventually it came to be banned by Sancho Carranza de Miranda, Inquisitor of Navarra.

The website Christianity.com credited the work as “the first popular Protestant catechism,” adding that “Luther did not issue his long and short catechisms until later the same year.”

“Valdés lamented the deep doctrinal ignorance of the priests and the Dialogue set out to remedy that,” stated the site.
