Pilgrims head to England to join the Mayflower – July 22, 1620

This week marks the anniversary of when the Pilgrims left Holland to England to join passengers on the Mayflower, setting sail for North America.

The Pilgrims joined other colonists and separatists. In addition to the Mayflower, another ship, known as the Speedwell, attempted to make the journey but suffered structural problems.

“On August 15, the Mayflower and Speedwell set sail for America. The Speedwell leaked so badly that both ships turned back to England, putting in first at Dartmouth and then at Plymouth,” noted the Pilgrim Hall Museum. “Finally, on September 16, 1620, the Mayflower set sail, alone, for America.”
