'A special responsibility': Former Rep. Liz Cheney

Former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., acknowledged Trump's victory in a statement posted to X, but suggested that other government officials must now serve as "the guardrails of democracy."

"Our nation’s democratic system functioned last night and we have a new President-elect. All Americans are bound, whether we like the outcome or not, to accept the results of our elections," Cheney wrote.

"We now have a special responsibility, as citizens of the greatest nation on earth, to do everything we can to support and defend our Constitution, preserve the rule of law, and ensure that our institutions hold over these coming four years," she added.

"Citizens across this country, our courts, members of the press and those serving in our federal, state and local governments must now be the guardrails of democracy."

In the days before the election, Cheney joined major media outlets in promoting the false story that Trump had called for her execution during an interview with Tucker Carlson last week.

Trump, who called Cheney "a very dumb individual" and "a radical war hawk" during the conversation with Carlson, suggested that she would be less enthusiastic for war if she had to personally face the consequences.

"Let’s put her with a rifle standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, OK? Let’s see how she feels about it. You know, when the guns are trained on her face," said Trump.

Cheney herself seized on Trump's comments to claim Trump was threatening her.

Cheney's father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, had also endorsed Harris.
