5. Trump halts trade talks with Canada over Reagan ad
In a statement posted to Truth Social Thursday, Trump revealed that "the Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs." He shared a statement from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute, which accused the ad of misrepresenting a "Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade" given by the 40th U.S. President, before condemning their "egregious behavior."
"ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump proclaimed. The president provided additional details about the ad as well as its implications and motivations in a subsequent Truth Social post published Friday, accusing Canada of "trying to illegally influence the United States Supreme Court in one of the most important rulings in the history of our Country."
The Supreme Court case in question, Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, will decide whether or not the International Emergency Economic Powers Act authorizes the president to unilaterally impose tariffs. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute indicated that it was considering taking legal action against the government of Ontario, Canada for publishing the ad featuring an edited version of the address without its consent.
