Trump's week in review: From feuding with Musk to a new travel ban
2. Trump institutes travel ban affecting 19 countries
In a presidential proclamation published Wednesday, Trump announced that the U.S. government was restricting entry into the U.S. from 19 countries. Factors that subjected countries to inclusion in the travel ban include vetting and screening processes that were “so deficient as to warrant a full or partial suspension on the admission of nationals from those countries” as well as large visa overstay rates and the presence of a hotbed of terrorist activity.
Admission into the U.S. has been fully suspended for nationals of Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Meanwhile, admission has been partially suspended for nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Full suspensions impact nationals on all types of visas, with limited exceptions, while partial suspensions only apply to those seeking certain types of visas.
Trump directed the secretary of state as well as the attorney general, the secretary of Homeland Security and the director of National Intelligence to write a report within 90 days containing recommendations as to whether restrictions on the affected countries should be modified and continue compiling such reports every 180 days thereafter. The relevant cabinet members are also ordered to work with the affected countries to help them comply with “United States screening, vetting, immigration, and security requirements.”
The travel ban is slated to go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Monday.
