Trump's week in review: From feuding with Musk to a new travel ban

5. Trump administration returns previously deported asylum seeker to US

A lawyer for OCG, an asylum seeker from Guatemala who was wrongly deported from the U.S. to Mexico after the Trump administration acknowledged that its previous insistence that OCG had told immigration officers that he had no fear of being sent to Mexico was incorrect, reported that her client had landed back in the U.S. as of Wednesday. In a statement to The Guardian, attorney Trina Realmuto said, “We can confirm that OCG landed in the US a few hours ago.”

“He made contact with the legal team while waiting in line to go through immigration,” she added. “We expect that he will be detained, but we don’t know where yet.”

The Trump administration was ordered to facilitate the return of OCG to the U.S. in a May 23 order issued by Judge Brian Murphy of the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts. As explained in the order, OCG was deported from the U.S. after entering illegally in 2024. When he tried to enter the U.S. a second time later that year, he was raped and held for ransom in Mexico. Upon OCG’s second arrival in the U.S., a judge determined that his asylum claim was valid.

While OCG was granted withholding of removal and assured he would not be deported to Mexico, the migrant was deported to Mexico. The Trump administration cited an affirmative statement from OCG that he would not feel unsafe in Mexico as the justification for its decision but later admitted that there was no witness to corroborate it and walked back the claim.
