Trump's week in review: Tariffs paused; sanctuary cities in crosshairs; religious freedom nominee named
5. Trump says admin. is 'working on papers' to defund sanctuary cities
In a statement posted Thursday, Trump said that his administration is "working on papers to withhold all Federal Funding" from sanctuary cities. The term "sanctuary city" refers to a city that does not cooperate with federal law enforcement when it comes to assisting with the deportations of illegal immigrants.
"No more sanctuary cities!" Trump declared. Denouncing sanctuary cities and states as "Death Traps," he contends that they "protect criminals, not the victims." The president insisted that "[t]hey are disgracing our Country and are being mocked all over the world."
According to the Center for Immigration Studies, a conservative think tank that supports immigration law enforcement, 13 states, the District of Columbia and more than 200 cities and counties across the U.S. have sanctuary policies in place.
Critics maintain that sanctuary policies put American citizens in danger, pointing to the 2015 death of Kate Steinle at the hands of an illegal alien in the sanctuary city of San Francisco, California as the most prominent example.
