UFC Fight News: Light Heavyweight Champ Cormier Signs New Deal
UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier could not hide his appreciation for the new deal he got from the mixed martial arts company, especially that the contract will see him fighting in The Octagon for eight more fights.
With those eight fights, it looks like the fighter will eventually be ending his career in the UFC. In an interview with MMAJunkie, he said, "The appreciation for what I've done so far in my career in the UFC, it showed," talking about the contract he just signed. According to him, he actually had four more fights remaining in his original contract but the negotiations for a new one was already expected.
The 36-year-old has had a successful career in mixed martial arts, compiling a record of 17-1 (6-1 UFC). This year was quite busy, albeit grueling for him, having to face three title fights, something that is not common for average MMA fighters. He, however, thinks that he deserves to take a break for his body to recover.
The former Olympic wrestler is the UFC light heavyweight champion and is ranked 8th in the official UFC pound-for-pound list of best fighters. His only loss comes from fierce rival Jon Jones in January, whom he wants to avenge in a rematch. While Jones just got out of a mess after a hit-and-run incident, there is no official word yet as to when or where the rematch happens.
Cormier revealed what he and the UFC talked about with respect to Jones:
"We talked about it, and I told them where I stood. They were very good about it and they were open and they listened to everything I had to say. We talked about it a little bit. They said they were going to let me get through the holidays and see how I felt at the end of the year."
The bad blood between the two fighters is obvious with the fact that Jones has been calling out Cormier ever since he got reinstated last month while Cormier for his part have only one dent in his record, and that is against Jones.
