Wii U Release Date: New Console May Help Nintendo Recover From $1.3 Billion Loss

Nintendo has experienced serious monetary loss in the last six months.

The video game giant is expected to post a recurring loss of about $1.32 billion for its first half of the year, according to Reuters.

Nintendo’s shares dropped 7.5 percent after these losses were reported. The company has been a dominating force in the gaming industry since releasing its original Nintendo Entertainment System in the mid 1980s.

In recent years, Nintendo has enjoyed much success with its handheld DS system and Wii console. Its newest handheld device, the 3DS, though, has struggled to gain prominence in the new generation of handheld devices that are exploding with popularity.

Sales for the Wii have begun to decline, because Sony’s PS3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 have better technology. The Wii still remains the highest selling console of this generation despite poor sales recently.

Wii U, the follow up to the motion based Wii console, is expected to launch next year and will play catch-up with Microsoft and Sony by implementing high definition graphics into the console.

The Xbox 360 and the PS3 have had HD gaming since their releases in 2006.

Nintendo chose to sacrifice that upgrade to implement more motion-based gaming with its Wii-mote and other accessories.

The Wii U’s controller resembles an iPad and can stream gaming onto its screen while the user has turned off their television. The device is rumored to launch around in spring 2012.
