Amazon Kindle Fire 2 Release Date Set for July 31?

The successor to the wildly successful Amazon Kindle Fire tablet could be unveiled as early as next month, according to a recent report from CNET.

The publication cites a "credible source" for the information on the unveiling and points to DigiTimes for the rumored specifications on the device.

DigiTimes recently wrote an article based on specs leaked to it by an "upstream supply chain" who revealed that the tablet will have a 7-inch display with a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution. It is expected to retail for $199. Once the new version launches, the original Kindle Fire's price will drop to $149.

9to5 Google is reporting that the device will feature a camera and physical volume-control buttons.

However, there are no other specifications available for the next-generation Kindle Fire at this time.

DigiTimes also speculated that new e-ink Kindles with integrated lighting were expected to be released with the next-generation Kindle Fire.

CNET consulted additional sources who told the publication that Amazon plans on releasing an upgraded version of its Kindle eReader, and not issue a next-generation model for the line.

The upgrades to the device include improved design and performance.

Amazon launched the Kindle Fire tablet in November of last year and the device went on to become the first real competitor for Apple's iPad.

The tablet runs an exclusive version of Android's operating system specifically tailored for the device that gives it access to the Amazon Appstore, streaming movies, Kindle's eBooks, and Google Play.

The Kindle Fire also opened up a brand new market for more affordable low-end tablets that other companies such as Google and ASUS are now attempting to enter into with the upcoming Google Nexus 7 tablet.
