Apple Watch Reportedly Sold More Than the First IPhone in Their First Year

Not a lot of people welcome the Apple Watch as something that has the same usefulness of the company's smartphone, the iPhone. So it should quite interesting to know that the sales of the smartwatch in its first year have actually exceeded that of the first-generation iPhone in its first year.

The figures might be saying something that's hard to believe, but they're figures. As a matter of fact, the Apple Watch was able to sell twice as many in the past year compared to the number of units of the first iPhone sold from 2007 to 2008.

The iPhone unveiled by Apple revolutionized the way consumers looked at a smartphone. It exceeded expectations and did more than any other smartphone brand or model in its time. The Apple Watch on the other hand had a "so-so" debut. So why the difference? What made the watch sell more than the phone?

First things first, the Apple Watch, though expensive compared to its direct competitors, actually wasn't as outrageously priced than the first iPhone in those times when they were released to the consumer market. The watch retailed at $350 while the iPhone was priced at $500. In 2007, buying a smartphone for that kind of price wasn't a societal norm. Its price limited it to the elite and those who could afford it.

To date, the Apple Watch has sold about 13 million units worldwide, which is second to the iPad, Apple's tablet computer that sold almost 20 million units when it was first released. For the first iPhone, the number is a mere 6.1 million.

But it also has to be noted that the Apple Watch is a kind of device that depends heavily on the iPhone, which means that those who bought it already own an iPhone. Therefore, it can be rational to say that the sales of the watch are directly connected and affected by the ownership of the iPhone.
