Ex-Atheist Author Lee Strobel Says His Marriage Improved After He and His Wife Became Christians

Former atheist Lee Strobel shares his life's story and his journey to Christianity in the new film "The Case for Christ," which hit theaters on Friday, April 7.

Strobel told the Gospel Herald that watching the movie was difficult for him because he was not proud of his behavior when he was not yet a Christian.

"I was a narcissistic, hedonistic, heavily drinking, self-destructive, self-absorbed person. So, nobody wants that portrayed in a movie. But, for the greater good of this message of redemption and transformation to get out, it's worth telling," he said.

Strobel's wife, Leslie, was the one who introduced him to God. When she became a Christian, Strobel was so frustrated that he told The Christian Post that he seriously contemplated divorcing her. But because he saw the positive changes in her when she accepted Jesus Christ into her life, Strobel became curious about her faith.

Leslie said the Bible verse Ezekiel 36:26 described her husband's transformation: "Moreover, I will give you a new heart, I will put a new spirit within you, and I will take your heart of stone, and turn it into a heart of flesh."

Leslie said she prayed for her husband daily even though he seemed to have closed off his mind on Christianity.

When Strobel finally embraced Christ, she told him that she loved him even more. The couple said it was one of the most profound moments in their lives.

"I did love him more," said Leslie. "I loved him so much — we met at 14; we kind of grew up together. But once I became a believer, I just loved him in ways I couldn't communicate."

Strobel felt the same way. He believes it was God who truly saved their marriage. "We were driving 100 miles an hour toward a cliff — a self-destructive cliff — in our marriage," he said. "God was able to take control of the car, turn it around, and take us on a new path that's been full of adventure and joy and wonder and surprises ever since."
