How to Hear God's Message

The desire to hear God is natural for a devoted Christian. Wouldn't it be wonderful to hear God Himself call upon our mistakes, assure His love for us and give us instructions? But it doesn't work that way. The Bible is filled with many wonderful characters but God spoke directly to a chosen few.

Hebrews 1:1 says: "In the past, God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways." In the Old Testament, God didn't speak directly to His people but through prophets and messengers that He appointed. This is the result of the breakdown of relationship between God and man.

Proceeding with the passage, we read: "But in these last days, he has spoken to us by His Son (verse 2)." The days of prophets are now over but God continues to speak to us through the words of His Son, Jesus. There are other verses in the Bible that back this claim.

The following remarks came from Jesus' mouth:

"He that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of Him (John 8:26)."

"For I have not spoken of myself but the Father which sent me, He gave me a commandment what I should say and what I should speak (John 12:49)."

We don't need to hear from God Himself as He has spoken to us through Christ as contained in the Bible. All we have to do is read, study and follow His commandments. The Scriptures are complete in providing comfort, advice, encouragement, admonishment, rebuke and instruction.

As pointed out earlier, the days of the prophets are over as the Bible already lays down events that will happen in the future that would culminate to Christ's second coming. One only has to pray for wisdom from the Holy Spirit to be able to understand God's message.
