Is Sony Working On A PlayStation 4.5?

A website that is known for reliable leaks when it comes to console gaming, Kotaku, recently revealed that Sony is working on an upgrade to its beloved gaming console, the PlayStation 4. According to the Kotaku report, their sources are saying that the PlayStation 4.5 is in the drawing board which will bring better "graphical power" and will support games that run on 4K resolution.

According to the report, the Japanese company has initiated discussions and "briefings" with developers already and some of these developers are saying that the new device will be powered by an upgraded graphical processing unit or GPU which will not only increase graphical processing power but will also "support high-end 4K resolution" that is becoming prevalent among games nowadays. The increased processing power is also targeted for use with the company's own PlayStation VR headset which is coming this fall.

The name "PlayStation 4.5" is by no means official. The Kotaku report cited that this is likely a name that was just coined by developers to describe a device that is not next-generation but provides an upgrade on the current generation device. It is also not known if this will be an entirely different device or simply an upgrade that PS4 owners can purchase.

The report also noted what developers have been discussing during the recently concluded GDC, where Sony was said to have conducted meetings with developers about the machine. Developers were overheard talking about a PS 4.5 with "its increased horsepower, mentioning both 4K resolution and PlayStation VR."

If these reports are true, the PS 4.5 will bring much better resolution for games, with up to four times the pixel size of 1,080p, the current resolution on offer in the PS4 and the Xbox One. Developers on the other hand will be able to make games with better graphics because of the 4K resolution support.

Sony has not made any official announcement or comment to the news.
