Popcorn Time Community Edition Shut Down Again By MPAA But Vows To Come Back
Last month saw the comeback of another popular BitTorrent, Popcorn Time, thanks to a new group of developers who took on the challenge of reviving the site even after two of its developers were forced to sign an agreement with anti-piracy group BREIN. According to a report in Tech Times however, the revived site which is called Popcorn Time Community Edition has been forced to shut down again, amidst pressure from the Motion Picture Association of America.
According to the report, the MPAA seems to be actively continuing its fight against sites that infringe copyrights thus the move against PTCE. After the developers were contacted by MPAA, they had to shut down not only the site but also the repository on GitHub. The developers however promised to bring back the site soon, vowing that they will come back with a better plan.
MPAA celebrated a victory over Popcorn Time when it successfully shut down the main site, Popcorn Time.io last month. This victory was shortlived, however, because this did not stop other developers from developing their own versions. Because of the open source code of the original site, Popcorn Time Community Time came to be.
The Tech Times report cited a revelation made by the moderator of the Popcorn Time subreddit, Luretrix2k, on how MPAA got in touch with the PTCE developers and told them to take down the site and the GitHub repository. The moderator however added that the team behind PTCE promised to "start all over again with a new strategy/game plan," one that considers all the possible legal hurdles that they may encounter along the way. He also said that the developers only need some time to sort things out, so that they can bring things back to normal.
On the other hand, BREIN has reportedly targeted two developers of the PTCE, forcing them to leave the project.
